New Links for the New Year!

Hey all!

I'll be back this weekend with a more substantive post ... I've been meaning to write up a "2012 Year in Review" post like many of the other postacademic bloggers have done, so I'll get to that this weekend.

The reason I've been neglecting my own blog, however, is because Currer, Lauren, Jet and I have been busily getting our new postacademic website up and running. We bought a domain, and set a template ... and now we actually have some content up!

So go check out our new site - How To Leave Academia! It's a work in progress, of course, and we still have some kinks to work out with the template (and a lot of content to add). But it's coming along nicely, and in the meantime we'd love to have folks bookmark it and start sending people over to check it out.

And as I mentioned in my last post ... if you have any ideas for content or if you'd like to contribute an article or a postacademic success story or just a thought about something that you see over there, leave a comment or email one of us!

--------------------------------------------------------

A couple of links to new blogs after the jump...

The first new blog is From PhD to Life. From the introductory posts, it sounds like the blogger is a Type 1 leaver from the humanities who is doing some freelancing and trying to figure out what comes next.

I'm particularly fond of this post, where the author talks about the difficulty of explaining the transition out of academia to others. It's a common theme in the postacademic blogsophere, and I appreciate the new blogger's suggestion that academic quittas (h/t: Lauren) simply say that they're "in transition," and leave it at that.

So go forth and check out the new blog!

--------------------------------------------------------

The second blog isn't a postacademic blog, exactly. However, Ron at Death By Trolley has written a really terrific series of posts about his decision to leave academia. Here is the first post - and you can find links to the second (and then to the third and fourth) post from there.

His series is a lot more in-depth about the process of leaving than I've ever been at this blog, and I really appreciate his perspective on it. The comparison to a professional baseball career is one I'd never seen before, but I think it fits very well.

So go forth and read, and I'll write more this weekend! Happy New Year, everyone!

I just checked out the new site. Great resource! I'm a big fan of document/web design and I feel like the design provides an overall meta-resource feel. The pull out quotes drawing attention to specific posts are very helpful. I can only imagine how useful I would have found that site, had I found it when I first started this leaving academia journey.

I bet your site eventually takes on a life of its own and organically grows into an important part of the leaving academia cultural landscape. Keep up the good work!

  2. I recently saw these two articles that give an extremely skewed image of being a professor - that it's one of the least stressful careers. Fortunately, enough people on Forbes complained and they added an addendum, but NBC hasn't done anything of the sort. I'm notifying you about this because I'm hoping that those of us who read and write these post-academic blogs can speak up about this.

    Here are the articles:

  4. Anonymous who made a comment on January 8th. There was a brutal critique of that article in either the Chronicle of Higher Education or Inside Higher Ed. I'm afraid that I don't remember which but several commentators on the article were furious.

  5. Just posted Part-Five of The Grad School Gospels (a series that I now see no clear end to...):

I've created a section of the website for post-academic writing if you want to put it under your links sections:
